Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains how Qa’na LLC (“we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, and shares your personal information when you use our services, including when you visit qanadating.com, use the Qa’na mobile app, or join our waitlist.

Qa’na is a faith-first marriage platform for the Ethiopian and Eritrean Orthodox diaspora, built to help members connect with genuine intention toward marriage — not casual dating. This Privacy Policy is here to help you understand what we collect, why, and what rights you have over it. If you don’t agree with our practices, please don’t use our Services. Questions or concerns? Contact us at info@qanadating.com.

1. What Information Do We Collect?

Personal information you disclose to us

We collect personal information that you voluntarily provide to us.

We collect personal information you provide when you register, build your profile, or otherwise interact with us. This includes:

  • Names
  • Email addresses
  • Passwords
  • Date of birth
  • Gender and gender preference
  • Denomination, fasting practice, church attendance, parish
  • Location (country, state/province, city)
  • Photos
  • Bio, hobbies, priorities, occupation, education level

Sensitive Information. Faith and matching are central to what Qa’na does, so we want to be direct about the sensitive categories we process:

  • Information revealing religious or philosophical beliefs — your denomination, fasting practice, and church attendance are used specifically to power faith-based matching, which is the core purpose of Qa’na. This information is never sold or shared with advertisers, employers, or religious institutions.
  • Data about a person’s sex life or sexual orientation — your gender and gender preference, used to determine compatible matches.

We process this sensitive information because it’s genuinely necessary to the service you’re signing up for — not as an incidental byproduct of some other feature.

Payment Data. If you subscribe to a paid tier, payment processing is handled entirely by Stripe. We do not collect or store your card details ourselves. Stripe’s privacy policy: https://stripe.com/privacy

Application Data. If you use our mobile app, we may also collect:

  • Mobile Device Data — device ID, model, manufacturer, operating system, browser type, IP address, and similar technical data, used for security, troubleshooting, and analytics.
  • Push Notifications — we may send push notifications about your account or app features; you can turn these off in your device settings.

Information automatically collected

Some information — like your IP address and browser/device characteristics — is collected automatically when you use our Services.

We automatically collect log and usage data (IP address, browser type, activity within the Services) and device data (device identifiers, hardware model, operating system) through the normal operation of our hosting and backend infrastructure. This is primarily for security, troubleshooting, and internal analytics.

We also use cookies and similar technologies — see our Cookie Policy: https://qanadating.com/cookies

2. How Do We Process Your Information?

We process your information to provide, improve, and administer our Services, communicate with you, for security and fraud prevention, and to comply with law.

We process your personal information to:

  • Facilitate account creation and authentication, and manage your account
  • Deliver the Services, including the matching algorithm, which weighs faith compatibility, shared priorities, practical fit, lifestyle, and mutual interest to suggest matches
  • Enable member-to-member communication through messaging
  • Save or protect an individual’s vital interest, when necessary (e.g., safety concerns)

We only process your information when we have a valid legal reason to do so.

3. What Legal Bases Do We Rely On to Process Your Information?

We only process your information when we have a valid legal reason under applicable law — like your consent, to fulfill our contractual obligations to you, or to comply with legal obligations.

If you are in the EU or UK, GDPR/UK GDPR require us to identify our legal bases, which may include: Consent (which you can withdraw anytime), Performance of a Contract (providing the Services you signed up for), Legal Obligations, and Vital Interests (protecting safety).

If you are in Canada, we rely on your express or implied consent, which you can withdraw at any time, except in limited legally-defined exceptions (e.g., fraud prevention, legal compliance).

4. When and With Whom Do We Share Your Personal Information?

We share information with the specific service providers listed below, and in limited other situations described here. We do not sell your personal information.

Service providers who process data on our behalf:

ServicePurpose
SupabaseDatabase, authentication, and backend infrastructure
StripePayment processing
VercelWebsite hosting
ResendTransactional email delivery (account confirmations, waitlist emails)

We may also share information:

  • In a business transfer — if we’re involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets
  • With other members — your profile is visible to potential matches as part of the core Service; messages are visible to the person you’re messaging

We do not share information with advertisers, data brokers, or unrelated business partners.

5. Do We Use Cookies and Other Tracking Technologies?

We use cookies and similar technologies to operate the Service securely and, in the future, may use them for basic analytics or ad campaign measurement.

We use cookies to maintain security, keep you logged in, and support basic site functionality. We do not currently use advertising/targeting cookies, but if that changes (e.g., ad campaign tracking pixels), we’ll update this policy and our Cookie Policy accordingly: https://qanadating.com/cookies

6. Is Your Information Transferred Internationally?

We may transfer, store, and process your information in the United States and other countries.

Our servers and service providers are located in the United States. If you’re in the EEA, UK, or Switzerland, your information will be transferred outside your region. We rely on the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses as our legal mechanism for these transfers, consistent with how our service providers (Supabase, Stripe, Vercel, Resend) handle cross-border data.

7. How Long Do We Keep Your Information?

We keep your information as long as you have an account with us, except for basic log/usage data, which we keep for 6 months.

Most personal information (profile data, faith information, messages) is retained as long as your account is active. Internet activity/log data is retained for approximately 6 months. When there’s no legitimate business need to retain your information, we delete or anonymize it, except where longer retention is legally required.

8. How Do We Keep Your Information Safe?

We use technical and organizational security measures, though no system can be guaranteed 100% secure.

We use encrypted connections and access controls (via Supabase’s built-in security infrastructure) to protect your information. However, no electronic transmission or storage method is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee against unauthorized access.

9. Do We Collect Information From Minors?

No. Qa’na is for members 18 and older, and this is enforced at signup.

We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18. By using Qa’na, you confirm you’re at least 18. Age is verified during onboarding, and enforced at the database level — an account cannot be created with a birthdate indicating an age under 18. If we learn someone under 18 has created an account, we will deactivate it and delete the associated data. Contact us at info@qanadating.com if you believe we’ve collected data from a minor.

10. What Are Your Privacy Rights?

Depending on where you live, you have rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict use of your personal information.

If you’re in the EEA, UK, Switzerland, or Canada, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or port your data, and to object to certain processing. Contact us at info@qanadating.com to exercise these rights, or to withdraw consent at any time.

UK residents: you can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint, 0303 123 1113).

Account management: You can update most of your information directly in Settings, or delete your account entirely, which deactivates it and removes it from matching. We may retain limited information afterward for fraud prevention, legal compliance, or dispute resolution.

Marketing opt-out: Unsubscribe from marketing emails via the link in any email we send.

11. Controls for Do-Not-Track Features

We do not currently respond to Do-Not-Track browser signals, as no uniform technical standard for honoring them has been established industry-wide.

12. Do United States Residents Have Specific Privacy Rights?

If you’re a resident of California or another state with a comprehensive privacy law, you have rights to know, access, correct, delete, and opt out of certain processing of your personal information.
